The Grand Bahama Power Company Employee Volunteer Group is having great success with their first project in local schools. Philcher Grant-Farquharson, Corporate Communications, remarked, “Every year, hundreds of high-school students graduate and begin the journey of trying to assimilate into the workforce. As a company and volunteer group, a grave concern of ours is the seeming lack of preparedness some of the students have as to proper interview conduct and resume writing skills.”

Hence, the GBPC Volunteer team created a joint venture with several public and private high schools on the island to focus on key areas: resume writing skills, pre-interview preparedness and appropriate interview conduct for high school students seeking to enter the job market. Some of the schools that participated in the seminar were Eight Mile Rock High, Sunland Baptist Academy, Bishop Michael Eldon, St. Paul’s Methodist College and Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy. The programme, which is entitled Good Corporate Citizen Initiative, is one that the group intends to conduct annually and is confident will expand to garner participation from even more schools next year.

The group has been met with enthusiasm and appreciation by the participating schools. Darrin Rolle, Vice-Principal of Tabernacle Baptist, commented, “We certainly appreciated the group taking the time to impart such critical and timely information to our students. The seminar was well-received and of particular interest to our students was the opportunity afforded by the group to participate in a real interview with the company for a possible summer internship.”

Group member, Nicola Cooper, said, “It was important to the group that we not only conduct the seminar but provide a real-life opportunity for the students to put into practice everything they were taught during the seminar. Ensuring our young students have the tools that they need to succeed and prosper is a priority and main area of focus for the employees of the GBPC Volunteer Group. We remain committed to doing our part.”
